Just finished watching.. Taare Zameen Par

April 28, 2008

[Don’t read the first paragraph if you haven’t watched the movie and planning to watch it in near future]

Just finished watching ‘Taare Zameen Par’, a movie directed and acted by Amir Khan. Nice movie. Good storyline. Not a typical ibrish zibrish hindi movie. It’s about an eight/nine year old youngster named Ishaan, who suffers from dyslexia (learning disability) and dislikes school. Instead of putting his efforts into studies, he is more curious about colors, fishes, birds and other so-known unimportant things to adult eyes. Due to his difficulty for reading and writing he cannot seem to get anything right in class. He always fails his exams and he doesn’t even feel bad about it. He is just carelessly joyful in his own little world. On the other hand, his elder brother is a very bright student in the school. So at some point his father gets frustrated and sends Ishaan to a boarding school. Over there Ishaan misses his mother and starts to get depressed. But things start to change when the temporary art teacher Ram (Amir Khan) joins the boarding school. He begins to notice that Ishaan is unhappy and not performing well. He also discovers that, Ishaan is suffering from dyslexia. So Ram starts to help Ishaan and eventually Ishaan improves his condition and the movie comes to a happy ending.

Well, this movie really took me down to the memory lane. I was able to relate myself with few incidents in this movie. Except for not being a dyslexic kid, Ishaan’s some activities and act reminded me of my school days in University Laboratory School. I was also forced to stand outside the classroom many a times for not doing my homework, for coming late, for talking in the classroom, for not bringing a particular book, for not paying attention to the teacher, for playing pen-fight (yes!!!pen fight was one hell of a game) and what not. Our uniform was sky-blue shirt, navy-blue pant and white sneakers. In the assembly, we were pulled out from the line and made to stand out and punished if the pant was too blackish or grayish or if the shirt was not blue enough. I remember my friend Sadat, I don’t know if he was color-blind or something. Every single day there was an issue with his uniform and we all knew that he was doing it intentionally just to piss off the class teacher. The scene where the teacher throws a piece of chalk at Ishaan, I have seen this part so many times in my life. I knew he was going to throw the chalk at him just by the way he was holding it. If fact, I had some teachers who weren’t that famous for teaching, but for their chalk throwing skills. Even in my college, I had a chemistry professor (BidyaSagar Sir) who used to throw chalks at students and his aim was quite good. :p So, it was not bad remembering all those childhood memories even though many of them weren’t very pleasant. :p

When the movie started, by looking at all those animated cartoon characters I thought this would be a kiddy movie. But no, it is not. It not only talks about childhood but also about being different in a society where everyone has to perform the same. I was amazed by the kid’s acting. Simply ‘AWESOME’! Any other kid might have completely overdone the part. His acting is so natural, you don’t even realize he’s acting.

Yes! This is another nice thing about this movie. They didn’t overdo it. There were no villains in the movie. Class toppers weren’t shown as jerks. Elder brother wasn’t necessarily a bully. Instead he was protective and caring. The mother was also supportive and protecting. The dad sometimes was too harsh on him, but it was not due to his lack of love. He was just not paying enough attention to understand his child’s mind and feelings. In boarding school Ishaan even had a nice friend (I think his name was Rajan).

Anyway, let’s talk about the morals this movie tries to teach the viewers. It shows how essential it is for parents to understand their children. It suggests them to be more sensitive, understanding and supportive of their children and their interests and abilities rather than following a one-size-fits-all policy. Kids are kids. They are not race horses. Sometimes parents get upset with silly matters and they just keep pushing their kids to achieve or win something. We have to keep in mind that every child is different. Not necessarily every child turns out to be a doctor or an engineer or a singer. Parents need to understand this. Different persons have different capabilities, limits, interests and that’s what makes us humans. Every child is special no matter how he or she looks, how he or she behaves, how he or she performs in the school, how sharp or dim they are. I think when you expect too much from someone they may become discouraged as they know they can’t deliver on your expectations. On the other hand, if you expect too less, they may well meet your expectations and deliver very little. There should be a balance and every parent should know it.

Anyway, I didn’t know that Leonardo Da Vinci could not write the number 7. That was something new.

The whole movie has made wonderfully, except for this one shot (in my opinion), where Ishaan is sitting in the classroom and looking at a mother-bird feeding her baby birds. This scene just didn’t fit. Somehow the shot looked phony. They could’ve done it better.

I watched the movie online and it didn’t have the subtitle. My hindi knowledge is limited so I kind of failed to understand few dialogues. Like when Ishaan’s dad comes to Amir Khan and talks about his wife surfing the internet and finding something. Then Amir Khan replies and says something about ‘Solomon Island’? I have not quite got the conversation.

If you want to watch it online, you can watch it from here. They also have other hindi movies.

Oh, another thing. I went to taarezameenpar.com and was checking out the casts. The kid who acts as Ishaan’s elder brother, his real name is Sachet Engineer. lol. Ya, I couldn’t believe it at first, too. Never thought ‘Engineer’ could be someone’s family name. Wired, huh?

I don’t write for many days and then when I start to write about something, I just can’t stop :p (I guess I am suffering from over-tyslexia or something :p)

BTW, I loved Amir Khan and the kid’s mohawk type hairstyle.
Oh, and also loved this song, ‘Maa’.

বাংলা :: You, Me and Dupree [2006]

June 16, 2007

[You need Bangla font to read the following text. http://www.omicronlab.com ]

You, Me and Dupree You, Me and Dupree

A Simple Plan [1998] :: A Simple Movie

June 9, 2007

“A Simple Plan” is a movie about greed. It shows how normal people change their behaviors and turn themselves into criminals.

Three friends: Hank, his mentally challenged brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and Luke (Jacob’s friend) from a small rural snowy town have found 4.4 million dollars in cash inside a crashed plane in the woods. They decide not to tell anyone about the money and keep it hidden until next spring. Then the simple plan they have made begins to get more and more complicated. Complication starts with Hank killing a farmer, follows by killing Luke, Luke’s wife, a fake FBI agent and a police deputy Carl and ends with killing his own brother Jacob. At the end, Hank gets to keep the money but learns the serial numbers have been recorded by the feds. So he burns the money.

Bob Thornton’s acting was outstanding. The only thing I didn’t like about this movie is burning 4.4 million dollars. Hank went through all these lying, cheating, killing and at the end he gave up so easily? He could’ve moved to some other country or just waited 5/10 years before spending the money. I guess the filmmakers wanted to give viewers a moral lesson and didn’t want to reward this type of behavior. Anyway, the ending wasn’t very convincing for me. Other than that, wasn’t a bad movie.

This movie reminds me the film Fargo. Both of them have similar plots. Even though Fargo won two Oscars yet I would say this movie has better storyline than Fargo. At least, I personally enjoyed this movie more than Fargo.

>> pi = 3.14159265 [1998]

June 9, 2007

Didn’t get a chance to watch any movie in last couple of days. Finally last night I managed to watch “Pi” (no!! not pee :p).

“9:13, Personal note: When I was a little kid my mother told me not to stare into the sun. So once when I was six, I did. The doctors didn’t know if my eyes would ever heal. I was terrified, alone in that darkness. Slowly daylight crept in through the bandages, and I could see, but something else had changed inside of me. That day I had my first headache.”

pi lab Max, the main character of “Pi” is a young genius mathematician who works with number theory and believes mathematics is the language of nature. He believes there is a certain pattern behind every single thing in this world and has built a computer to find that pattern. Throughout the movie he tries to find a string of 216 numbers which explains that pattern. Somehow this string of numbers is related with Pi (3.14) [ i don’t know how, didn’t pay that much attention :p]. So as an experiment, Max tries to find a system to predict the behavior of stock market. Wall Street people find about it and chase him to capture that number. Also, a young orthodox Jew (member of a group of Jew people who think the Tawrat, holy book of Jew religion has a secret message hidden inside it which can be obtained by getting that 216 numbers code) tries to convince Max to give him the number.

Max also has this severe migraine pain since childhood and at the end Max makes a hole in his head with a drill machine to get over with his pain. :p He almost kills himself and ends up in a white peaceful place; finally he smiles for the first time in the movie. He looks around himself and doesn’t see a pattern anymore and finds happiness at last.

Is this movie about mathematics (which I thought at first)? No, I don’t think so. There is nothing about mathematics in this movie except few contour maps, meaningless graphs and random numbers. Is it about headache then? Probably “yes”, because after finishing this movie I felt dizzy and got a headache form its unpleasant camera works and wired camera angles. :p This movie is in black and white (which I don’t mind) with annoying screen flickering.

Anyhow, overall “pi” is an average movie. Nothing extra-ordinary about it.

There is another movie from the same director: “Requiem for a Dream”. I think I am going to watch that one next.

I rate this movie 3.02783948374758485744857 out of 9.98578483992049435.

Adios!

Deja Vu [2006] :: Watch it and laugh your ass off :p

June 3, 2007

Just finished watching Deja-Vu.
First of all, I wanted to watch this movie only because of the title “Deja-Vu” and the main actor Denzel Washington. I thought it would be something like ‘Lake House’ or ‘Vanilla Sky’. I did not expect a time-traveling movie. Few of my friends watched it in the theater. One of them called it a stupid and boring movie. For other twos’ it was an excellent one. So I was a bit confused and decided to see it by myself.

deja vu danzelHere’s how the story goes: Denzel Washington plays Doug Carlin, a federal agent who is called in to recover evidence in the investigation of a New Orleans ferry bombing that killed over 500 people. Doug finds the body of Clarie (one of the victims). By investing her dead body Denzel comes to know that she has died before the bombing. He also finds out that, the bomber has used her car to bomb. During the investigation FBI invites him to use one of their secretly invented devices called ‘Snow White’, which can show past. Eventually using that machine, Denzel travels to past and stops the girl’s death and the bombing.

The concept is great. The story is garbage. All time-traveling movies face this challenge of making it somewhat believable to the viewers. Because it is really hard to make a possible plot out of something impossible. I personally believe time-traveling is not possible unless everything around us is just a dream (like Matrix LOL, all you do is just switch from one dream to another). I mean, how can you travel back in time to stop a ship from exploding, if it never exploded in the first place?

Anyway, I think this movie has too many blank holes. It is hilarious, when Denzel points his laser pointer to the monitor and Clarie sees it from the past. LOL A monitor is nothing but a device that just shows output. It doesn’t take inputs from outside world. Even if it is a specially made two-way monitor, why don’t all other lights from the lab go through? Why only the laser light? If she can see the laser, she should also see the laboratory and all the people watching her.

The stupidest thing is when they try to explain “Snow White” scientifically. “Time is linear; space bends, you can bend space and come back to a certain point of time by using electro magnetic fields (what a crap!!)”. At first they say with snow white you can only view past. Then out of nowhere Denzel suggests sending a note to the past (here Denzel outsmarts the scientists and the computer programmers). So they send a paper to the past. Instead of sending a whole page explaining everything, they send a stupid note with only few words on it. Then within few hours Denzel comes back again and this time he wants them to send him 4 days ago and they successfully do it using the same machine [which is originally designed to only view past, now they have a chamber where 6’3” tall Denzel fits perfectly LOL].

Another stupid idea they have used here is, time-traveling machine has a radius limit and it doesn’t work outside major cities. LOL I guess their time-traveling machine is worse than Google’s Earth software :p

I know I should not bother too much about how believable a sci-fi action movie is. But still, come on, we are not dumbs. If it is only about getting entertained and passing time, why don’t you just remake Tom & Jerry.

Damn! I guess I am just wasting too much of my time by writing stupid reviews for these stupid movies. :(

Hannibal Rising [2007] :: OK movie

June 3, 2007

Fourth movie of the serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter series.
“In Red Dragon we learned who he was. In the silence of the Lambs we learned how he did it. Now comes the most chilling chapter in the saga of Hannibal Lecter – the one that answers the most elusive question of all – why?” – From the back cover of Hannibal Rising DVD.

hannibal picture

So, this movie is about how and why Hannibal, a brilliant medical student turns himself into a monster. The story starts during 2nd world war when the German army are crossing Lithuania pursued by the Russians. Hannibal and his parents have escaped from their castle home in Lithuania to their family’s hunting lodge in the woods. When a team of Russian army stops to get water they’re spotted by German bombers and Hannibal’s parents are killed leaving him and his sister. Soon they are discovered by a team of looters and his sister Mischa is killed.

Then he goes to his aunt (Gong Li) and stays with her for few years. During that time he kills a local butcher for insulting his aunt. Eventually he gets himself admitted into a medical school and he starts to take the revenge for his sisters death.

Things I liked:
Gaspard Ulliel plays excellently as young Hannibal Lecter. Though few of the times he tries too desperately to be creepy :p

Things I didn’t like:

First part of the movie makes sense. At the end it just goes too fast. It doesn’t sound easy to find 5/6 soldiers after 10/12 years of a major war just by remembering their faces. Still he quietly finds them (no threat, no chase) and quietly kills them and then walks away; police knows he’s doing it but don’t stop him.

Just another revenge taking action movie. Nothing special. This isnt a great movie. It’s not a bad one either. If you are crazy about Hannibal’s movies, you probably will enjoy this one.

Apocalypto :: “When the end comes, not everyone is ready to go.”

June 1, 2007

apocalypto green

Just finished watching ‘Apocalypto’ directed by Mel Gibson. I heard about Maya civilization since I was a kid. Didn’t know much about them though. I really had no clue that they were such a bloodthirsty civilization. I knew they had knowledge of medicine, science, archeology and engineering but didn’t know about their brutal side. After watching this movie I am sure whatever they were, they weren’t civilized at all :p

BTW, this movie is not in English. It’s in Mayan language with English subtitle. The story started with a series of scenes from a tribal village. One morning the tribal hunters were captured by Maya warriors and were taken to be sacrificed. One of them named “Jaguar Paw”[hero/main character] escaped to rescue his pregnant wife (she looks like Hindu Goddess ‘Ma Durga’ :p) and son back in the forest where they lived. So the movie was not bad. It wasn’t only about people killing people. It was also about love, faith and hope. Jaguar Paw came back to get his family and moved back to nature.

However, to be honest, I guess I expected too much from this movie. :p and after watching it I am just somewhat satisfied. All three movies directed by Mel Gibson (BraveHeart, Patriot, Passion of Christ) were outstanding. For this one, I am not that confident. Few of the shots looked so unreal. I felt like I was watching the special features [deleted scenes, making of the movie: stuff like that] of the DVD. It didn’t look like it was in the movie. Especially, when “Jaguar Paw” ran through the jungle. I don’t know. Something was missing or may it was just too real and tricked my dumb mind: p. Also there was a scene with the Snake bite and the quote was “He’s Fucked”. I am sure the word “Fuck” wasn’t around then. :p

Anyway, If you want to watch it, go ahead. It’s a nice epic action movie. But I don’t think I would watch it again.

Epic Movie/The Salton Sea/Veer-Zaara

May 31, 2007

Epic Movie: Stupid movie. Bad! Bad! I love the whole Scary Movie series. I even loved the ‘Date Movie’. This one is from 2 of the original 6 writers of the Scary Movies, I shouldn’t have wasted my time.

The Salton Sea: 2002 movie. Danny Parker (Val Kilmer – I don’t know how he looks so young in this movie, he is almost 50 i guess) actsas a drug addict punk (undercover cop) to take revenge of his wife’s murder against two corrupted cops. Nice movie.

Veer-Zaara: I just got the DVD; haven’t watched it yet. I dont usually watch hindi movies. Kazi recommended it. Lets see.

School For Scoundrels [2006]

May 31, 2007

Typical comedy movie (not even that funny) with a happy ending. I would say waste of time. On the DVD cover it says “Bad Santa meets Napoleon Dynamite”. Bullshit!! Hurr!! Doesn’t even come close. This one is nothing compared to those twos. BAD SANTA rocks.

From BAD SANTA [2003]:

Situation: Willie has just passed out
Gin: Look here, get himy outta here and I’ll go smooth things over with Chipeska, Tell him it was food poisoning or something.
Marcus: What do you mean, get him outta here?
Gin: Take him to the car.
Marcus: In case you didn’t notice I’m a motherfucking dwarf, so unless you got a forklift handy, maybe you should lend a hand hmm?
Gin: That figures. You want all kind of set-asides. Special treatment ’cause you’re handicapped. You’re all the same.
Marcus: Special treatment? I’m 3-foot-fucking-tall you asshole! It’s a matter of physics. Draw me a sketch of how I get him to the car, huh?
Gin: Bitch, Bitch, Bitch!
Marcus: Sketch it up, you fucking moron. Fucking Leonardo da Vinci.
Gin: What’d you call me thigh-high?
Marcus: I called you a fucking guinea homo from the 15th-fucking-century, you dickhead!
Gin: I could stick you up my ass, small fry.
Marcus: Yeah? You sure it ain’t too sore from last night?
Gin: You got some lip on you midget.
Marcus: yeah? Well these lips were on your wife’s pussy last night. Why don’t you dust that thing off once in a while? Asshole!
